Materials Testing Facilities

The Centre also provides expertise in the following areas:

  • Full experimental assessment of materials, especially fiber-reinforced composite materials, using ASTM and MIL standard test methods. The investigation can be conducted with the following state-of-the-art equipment:

    • Destructive mechanical testing capabilities
      •  Computer-controlled Instron universal testing equipment
      •  Low-velocity impact tower, equipped with various sensors

    • Non-destructive mechanical testing capabilities
      •  Laser doppler vibrometer testing equipment
      •  Ultrasonic testing equipment (Boeing spec)
      •  Grindosonic testing equipment
      •  Environmental testing chamber
      •  Salt-fog testing chamber

  • Complete service in finite element analysis for structural and material response assessments. The Centre offers long-held expertise in assessing highly nonlinear phenomena and specifying structural optimizations. It has full access to the following commercial codes:
    •  ABAQUS •  LSDYNA •  NISA •  Matlab

  • Expertise in fracture mechanics, especially for assessment of offshore structures (piplines, platforms, and risers).

  • Complete analytical and experimental assessment of mechanically fastened, welded, and adhesively bonded joints in particular.
