SOFTWARE

ORCA has been developing CFD software called Numerical Wind Tunnel, capable of simulating flows around multiple, complex, moving geometries. The code has many innovative features:

  • ØImmersed Boundary Method for BC specification

  • ØSolution visualization with OpenDX (IBM)

  • ØAdaptive anisotropic Cartesian grid

  • ØAutomatic grid refinement/coarsening

  • ØMulti Scale Large Eddy Simulation – LES Turbulence Model

  • Ø Fluid-structure interaction forces

  • ØGeometric definition by importing .STL files

  • ØSolution visualization with OpenDX

The following is a list of example flows that have been solved using the NWT:

  • Ø Vortex induced vibration in petroleum exploration cylinders (2D and 3D), with cylinder motion induced by fluid-structure interaction.

  • Ø Rotating 2D rectangle in stationary fluid

  • Ø Flow around a moving airfoil

  • ØPressure distribution around a ship as shown in the above video

    HARDWARE

    ORCA - (DELL) cluster

ORCA provides a wide range of simulation services, using both in house and commercial software. The software is used to simulate hydrodynamics, structural and fluid-structure interactions for ships and marine structures. The calculations are carried out on our own PC cluster with the following characteristics:

    16 x 3.6GHz/2MB Cache, Xeon 800MHz Front Side Bus

    2 GB DDR2 400MHz (4X512MB) DualRanked DIMMs, BCC

    APC SMART-UPS XL MODULAR-3000VA 208V RM TOWER

    PowerConnect 2724 Web-managed Switch, 24 Port GE, 2 GE/SFP Combo Ports

The system uses the Linux Rocks Version 4.1 this distribution is based on Red Hat 4.1, 64 bit with MPICH 2.6 for parallelization
