Meet the Director

Dr. Farid Taheri is a professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering and the Materials Engineering Program at Dalhousie University. He has expertise in advanced structural and materials analysis using both experimental and computational tools.

He has been a registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) in Nova Scotia since 1986, and received his doctoral degree in Engineering in 1988. He worked in industry as a professional engineer for eight years before joining academia in 1994. While working in industry, he was directly responsible for solving specialized engineering problems with the aid of computational tools, as well as for experimental mechanics work on projects for agencies such as Defence Research Development Canada (Atlantic), the Canadian Space Agency, the Directorate of Aerospace Engineering, Boeing, Grumman Aerospace, and Textron Inc., as well as several private manufacturing firms such as General Dynamics Canada.

Dr. Taheri has published over 130 papers in reputable, refereed international journals and conference proceedings, along with 45 other conference proceedings and federal government reports. He is also a reviewer for 12 international engineering journals, and one of the four co-founders of Dalhousie's Institute for Research in Materials.

In addition, Dr. Taheri has been a guest lecturer at the invitation of several industrial and learned societies. He has also served on several boards, most recently on the executive board of the Nova Scotia Boat Builders Association.

Through his directorship, ORCA will provide expertise in a broad range of disciplines related to ocean and offshore engineering, with a particular focus on the oil and gas industry, as well as the ship- and boat-building industries.
